Our Pre-School Program

Saint Mary School has a wonderful pre-school program for our children who are three-five years old.

Our philosophy is increasingly comprehensive and responsive to new research and requirements, and embraces cultural competence. This approach encourages teachers to build a classroom community that empowers families with holistic strategies designed to achieve excellence in school readiness and the development of good character. Learning domains based on the Ohio Early Learning and Development Standards are at the foundation of our curriculum.

Character development and enrichment programs including music and movement are purposefully interlaced into the classrooms. This ensures children have a quality experience with excitement and creativity woven into the daily curriculum. Our enrichment programs include physical development, science, religion, music, and the arts with activities related to the learning domains and performance standards.

Transitional-Kindergarten

Transition Program for 4-5  year-olds

Purpose: Transitional Kindergarten’s primary purpose is to help ensure kindergarten readiness and increase the likelihood of academic success for the child. The program bridges the gap between preschool/prekindergarten curriculum and kindergarten curriculum. It allows another year for the child to academically, socially, and emotionally develop before entering kindergarten. Additionally, the transitional kindergarten concept provides an academically rigorous program to capture the attention and curiosity of children who have already completed a prekindergarten program, but are not old enough to enter a full-day kindergarten program.

Criteria:

  • The child has already completed 1 year in a prekindergarten program.

  • The child will not be 5 prior to May 30th of the year in which the next school year begins (i.e. a summer or fall birthday)

  • The child will not be 5 prior to starting the current school year (i.e. an older 4-year-old).

  • The child is still developing social-emotional skills or is inconsistent with age appropriate social skills.

  • The child has never attended a daycare, preschool, or prekindergarten program.

Staff: The teacher of the Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program is a licensed teacher through the Ohio Department of Education. This license and training results in effective pedagogical practices, assessment techniques, and overall classroom environment.

Benefits: The TK program provides an opportunity to assist students who might not otherwise be ready for kindergarten due to age, social-emotional readiness, or academic concerns. The TK program also bridges the gap for many families whose child has completed the prekindergarten program at another school, but who is not quite ready to enter kindergarten. This innovative model provides a unique solution to the difficult decision of making a child repeat a year of the same curriculum or enter kindergarten too soon.

Scheduling: TK generally follows the preschool/prekindergarten schedule and includes lunch, recess, free play, and nap time in addition to the academic components of the day.

Uniform: TK Students follow the Kindergarten uniform policy and thus are required to wear the school uniform.

Pedagogy: Transitional Kindergarten provides the child with blended learning experiences that incorporate the learning standards and teaching strategies used with prekindergarten students and those of traditional full-day kindergarten. These standards come from the Ohio Department of Education and the Diocesan Course of Study. Special attention and extra time is devoted to those skills deemed essential to kindergarten success.
